Vilnius: A legendary city at the crossroads of time

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania with a rich, centuries-old history, located in the picturesque valley of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Its history dates back to ancient times, long before the city was officially founded.

Legendary birth of the city

The first settlements on the territory of modern Vilnius date back to the Mesolithic era, around the 5th century B.C.[4] The city is surrounded by fascinating legends, the most famous of which is related to Grand Duke Gedimin.

According to legend, the prince stopped in the valley of the Holy Horn (Shvyantaragisa) while hunting. At night he dreamed of a huge iron wolf that howled like a hundred wolves. The priest Lizdeika interpreted the dream as an omen: a great city would be founded on this place, which would become the capital of the Lithuanian lands and become famous throughout the world.

Historical milestones

Establishment of the capital

In 1323 Vilnius was first mentioned in written sources as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Key events in the city’s history:

  • 1387: Obtaining Magdeburg right
  • 1503-1522: Construction of the city wall with nine gates and three towers.
  • 1544: The city flourished under King Sigismund the Old.
  • 1579: Founding of the Academy of the Society of Jesus (future University of Vilna)

Difficult Periods

The city endured many challenges, including:
- Devastating fires in 1610, 1737, 1748, 1749
- The devastating Russo-Polish War of 1654-1667, when up to 25,000 inhabitants were killed.

Cultural heritage

Vilnius is a unique university city, the first scientific and cultural center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Here in 1397 the first school in the territory of modern Lithuania was founded, and in 1522 Francysk Skorina published the first printed books.

The city retains its unique spirit, where every street breathes history and legends intertwine with reality. Vilnius is not just a capital city, it is a living museum that tells the fascinating story of the Lithuanian people.

Belgrade: A city at the crossroads of culture and history

Belgrade is a unique city with a rich, centuries-old history, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Its history spans more than two thousand years, and each period has left its indelible mark on the city’s appearance and character.

Ancient Roots and Historical Transformations

The first settlements on the territory of modern Belgrade appeared as early as the Neolithic era. In the 7th century BC, Thracian-Cimmerian and Scythian tribes settled here, and in the 3rd century BC, the Celts founded the settlement of Singidunum. The Romans turned the city into an important strategic point of the empire, where it flourished for about four centuries.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city changed hands several times:
- Byzantine Empire
- Slavic tribes
- Bulgarian kingdom
- Kingdom of Hungary
- Ottoman Empire

The 15th to 19th centuries were particularly dramatic, when Belgrade became the scene of fierce battles between various states. It was only in 1867 that the city finally became the capital of independent Serbia.

Sights and Cultural Features

Belgrade Fortress

The heart of the city is the Belgrade Fortress, which has a history of about 2300 years. The fortress is unique for its architectural heterogeneity: Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Serbian buildings[1] can be seen here.

Key objects of the fortress:
- Nebojša octagonal tower
- Despot’s Gate
- Ružica Church with unusual chandeliers made of shell casings and cold weapons
- Mehmed-Pasha Sokolović Fountain
- Mausoleum of Damad Ali Pasha

City Districts

The most interesting districts of Belgrade:
- Stari Grad (Old Town) - the tourist heart of Belgrade
- Zemun - a neighborhood rich in history
- Novi Beograd - the modern part of the city

Modern Belgrade

Today Belgrade is a living, multi-layered city where Russian and European cultures meet. Despite its complex history, which included three major bombings in the 20th century, the city retains its unique spirit and character.

Belgrade is not just the capital of Serbia, it is a crossroads of cultures, where every stone breathes history and every street tells its own fascinating story.

Old Tallinn & its Medieval past tour

From time to time I am guiding walking tours in Old Town of Tallinn and will be happy to show you its highlights and tell different curiosities of medieval daily life.
We’ll see a wealthy merchant’s house, the old pharmacy, the marketplace, the knights area, churches, Town Hall, artisans’ and merchants’ guilds and, of course, city wall & towers.

Learn who lived in the upper and lower towns, who didn’t pay fees to enter the city, how women cared for their beauty, the price of black pepper, why some young men were called Blackheads, and the meaning behind the medieval proverb “Town’s air makes anyone free”.
Welcome!))
