Marl is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in the Ruhr area, and is known for its large chemical industry site (Chemiepark Marl), one of the biggest chemical production complexes in Europe.
The city is associated with the “Grimme-Preis” (Adolf Grimme Award), one of Germany’s most prestigious television awards, which originated in Marl and is administered by the Grimme Institute there.
Marl’s “Marler Stern” is a notable 1970s-era urban shopping and civic complex that became a well-known example of modernist city planning in Germany.
