Belgrade: A city at the crossroads of culture and history

Belgrade is a unique city with a rich, centuries-old history, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Its history spans more than two thousand years, and each period has left its indelible mark on the city’s appearance and character.

Ancient Roots and Historical Transformations

The first settlements on the territory of modern Belgrade appeared as early as the Neolithic era. In the 7th century BC, Thracian-Cimmerian and Scythian tribes settled here, and in the 3rd century BC, the Celts founded the settlement of Singidunum. The Romans turned the city into an important strategic point of the empire, where it flourished for about four centuries.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city changed hands several times:
- Byzantine Empire
- Slavic tribes
- Bulgarian kingdom
- Kingdom of Hungary
- Ottoman Empire

The 15th to 19th centuries were particularly dramatic, when Belgrade became the scene of fierce battles between various states. It was only in 1867 that the city finally became the capital of independent Serbia.

Modern Belgrade

Today Belgrade is a living, multi-layered city where Russian and European cultures meet. Despite its complex history, which included three major bombings in the 20th century, the city retains its unique spirit and character.

Belgrade is not just the capital of Serbia, it is a crossroads of cultures, where every stone breathes history and every street tells its own fascinating story.
